According to reports, 19% of IT professionals were able to find work upon getting (Microsoft) certified. Microsoft offers over 250 different courses. Some popular Microsoft courses include MTA Windows Server Administration Fundamentals (98-365), Installing and Configuring Windows 10 (MD-100), Managing modern desktops (MD-101), Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104), and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900).
So, Why do a Microsoft course? These courses prove to an employer that a candidate has gained the appropriate knowledge and expertise by successfully completing the final certification exam. The more Microsoft certifications you have listed on your resume, the better your resume will look. You can base the courses you decide to take on the type of IT job you are looking for. For example, are you looking to be a developer, administrator, engineer, etc? Microsoft offers courses for all of them!
The majority of Microsoft certification exams require a pass mark of 700 out of a possible 1000 points. So now you must be wondering, How much is it to take the certification exam? There are 3 different certification levels. Fundamentals, Associate, and Expert. Fundamentals certifications require just 1 exam to be taken and can cost up to $150 AUD. Associate certifications require either 1 or 2 exams to be taken and can range from $220 to $460 AUD. And finally, the Expert certifications usually have a prerequisite of completing certain Associate certifications and require either 2 or 3 exams. Expert certifications can range from $220 to $700 AUD. Not cheap is it! Failing a Microsoft exam is common so it is good to note if you fail an exam, you will need to repay the same price to have another attempt.
Now moving on, Let’s talk specifically about the MD-100 and MD-101 courses as they are the Microsoft certifications I have recently completed. I received my Modern Desktop Administrator Associate certification (which is the certificate received after successfully passing BOTH the MD-100 and MD-101 courses) on Wednesday, 25th of August 2021. One thing I personally love about Microsoft certifications is you are able to take the exam at an exam center or online in the comfort of your own home. I sat the MD-100 exam at the Logitrain offices in Melbourne, and due to the ongoing lockdown in Melbourne, I was offered to sit the MD-101 exam at home. It is also good to note that Microsoft exam content is regularly updating and changing depending on new technology and what’s happening in the IT world.
Taking an exam from my room for the first time was an odd experience, however, it had to be done, and now is my preferred option. While a candidate takes the exam, you will be watched and heard by a Microsoft proctor the whole time, you can even see their face in a small popup in the top corner. You aren’t allowed to read a question out loud and no one is allowed to walk into your room during the exam, or you will instantly fail. There are more important rules for Microsoft exams, so read them carefully before sitting your final exam!
To conclude, yes It is possible to self-study these Microsoft courses, however, enrolling yourself with a trainer is highly recommended. Although it can get a little pricey, I recommend looking in your area to find a trainer-led Microsoft course that best suits you and your budget. It can get even pricier if you only stick to self-study and keep failing an exam as you will need to keep paying to resit them. I believe if I only stuck to self-study I would have wasted a lot of time studying topics that would have been of no use for the final exam.
