The Importance of ISTQB Certification

ISTQB certification is a widespread certification for a tester and many believe that gaining the certification can improve the quality of testing that is done. Others also believe that this can help them in their career growth and salary hike. It is considered to be of a high-quality syllabus and hence many industries use the same terminology in their software testing professions.

Let’s see the different certifications that can be gained by a person who wants to be a renowned software tester.

Foundation level: This is aimed at people who want a basic understanding of the software testing process. For people who are already working in the testing field, this would be a practical knowledge implementation of the concepts that they already know. This is a pre-requisite for many higher level exams and is usually recommended for people who at least have six months experience as a tester. The exam consists of 40 questions, which are of multiple choices with a pass percentage of 65.

Agile tester extension: This exam is intended to clear the concepts about agile methodologies and how testing varies as compared to a traditional approach. It is important for testers working in an agile environment to understand the concepts and work accordingly. This exam also consists of 40 multiple choice questions to be completed in an hour with a pass percentage of 65.

Model-based tester extension: Model-based testing is considered to be an innovative approach which increases the efficiency of the test process. One uses models to drive the test analysis and design and can retain the models for implementation and reporting. It also has multiple choice questions of 40 and a pass mark of 65% to be attempted in an hour.

Advanced level: This is for people with experience as a software tester or for people who need to understand the nuances of testing such as a project manager. Completion of foundation certificate is a pre-requisite for this exam. There are three levels of exam under this with 65% pass for each.

  • Advanced Test Manager
  • Advanced Test Analyst
  • Advanced Technical Test Analyst.

Security tester: This is aimed at people who have at least three years of experience in their relevant fields and obtaining a Certified Tester Foundation level is a pre-requisite for taking up this exam. The examination is comprised of 45 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 65%.

Expert level: This takes the testers to next level by providing in-depth practical knowledge in a variety of testing subjects. This is the highest level of certificate that can be achieved by an individual and gaining this has proven to have increased the chances of an individual to grow in his career tremendously. It has two parts Improving the Test Process and Test Management.

The pre-requisites for this exam include possessing all of the below:

  • Foundation Certificate
  • Advanced Certificate in any specific module
  • Expert level exam certificate
  • Five years of practical testing experience
  • Two years of industry experience in a particular Expert level topic.

The exam has two parts with a combination of multiple choice questions and essay writing and has a pass percentage of 65% and is valid for five years.
