You must hold the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate, version 4.0 or earlier, before you can be awarded the Agile Tester certification. This is a firm requirement set by ISTQB, not a recommendation. If you do not yet hold it, start with the ISTQB Foundation certification course, which includes the official exam fee and is the entry point for every other ISTQB certification.

Beyond the certificate itself, a general understanding of test design, test process and testing terminology is helpful, and some exposure to Agile ways of working will make the material easier to absorb. There is no programming requirement for this Foundation level Agile certification.

Exam format: a maximum of 40 multiple choice questions, 60 minutes, with a passing score of 65 per cent, which is 26 correct answers out of 40. Candidates sitting the exam in a language that is not their native language may apply for a 25 per cent time extension.

Please note the current status of this certification. Following the release of the Advanced Level Agile Tester (CTAL-AT) version 2.0 on 6 May 2026, ISTQB has placed the Foundation Level Agile Tester (CTFL-AT) into its sunset phase. The English exam and accredited training are available until 6 May 2027, and non-English until 6 November 2027. If you want to hold this certification, the time to complete it is before those dates.

Should I do ISTQB Foundation or Agile Tester first?

Foundation first, every time. The ISTQB Foundation certificate is the required prerequisite for the Agile Tester certification, and the current Foundation CTFL v4.0 syllabus already includes Agile content, so it is the better starting point for anyone new to testing.

Is the ISTQB Agile Tester certification still worth doing?

It depends on your situation. ISTQB has placed CTFL-AT into a sunset phase, with English exams and training available until 6 May 2027, and it has built Agile content into the current Foundation syllabus. The Agile Tester certification still makes sense if you hold an older Foundation certificate and want a dedicated Agile credential before the sunset, or if an employer asks for it specifically. If you want deeper Agile testing skills for the long term, look at the advanced Agile path instead.

What salary can an Agile tester expect?
