OET Preparation

OET is a global English language test that evaluates the communication skills of health care professionals/experts who try to enrol and practice in an English-speaking environment.

It gives the opportunity for a valid and reliable assessment for all four tasks i.e. Speaking, writing, reading and listening which able candidates to focus on enhancing communication in field of health professionals.

OET tests international health practitioners in the following 12 professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science.

OET carries four different modules basis on the communication of health care environment.

  • Listening (50 minutes approx.): content in listening module is same for all heath care professionals.

Listening contains two sections:

Section A: recorded, simulated professional/patient consultation with note-taking questions.

Section B: recorded talk or lecture on health-related topic, with range of short and multiple choice answers.

  • Reading (1 hour): content in listening module is same for all heath care professionals.

Section A: skim and scan short health-related texts and complete a summary paragraph by filling in missing words.

Section B: read longer health-related texts and answer multiple-choice questions.

  • Writing (45 minutes): content is related to profession, it carries workplace situations.

This section is to write a letter, usually a referral letter. Sometimes, especially for some professions, a different type of letter is required: e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient or group.

  • Speaking (20 minutes): content is related to profession, it carries workplace situations.

In a private room, you will take part in two role-plays. You take your professional role (as a healthcare professional) while the interlocutor plays a patient or client, or sometimes a relative.
