What Type of The Reference do You Have to Put in Your Resume?

What Type of The Reference do You Have to Put in Your Resume

References are a list of the contacts of old employers, which you provide to your interviewer for more information about your past work and skills. Usually, employers use these references in order to get a third-party opinion about you before taking you. It is recommended by neither HR professionals nor experts to write down references in the resume.  Moreover, some claim it is an old-fashioned practice to add the ‘available upon request’ common phrase, as it takes precious real-estate from the already short resume document.

Further, reference check may be a final step of an employers before hiring the employees. The employer does not need to contact the candidate’s references before it is decided to pursue further with an application.  Therefore, the employer will be contacting the candidate to ask for the information, which gives the candidate the benefit of staying in control for any progression made with his application.

When writing a cover letter, it is possible to say ‘feel free to contact my referees’ in the closing paragraph.  Some employers request specific referees from academy and industry or are asking to include specific roles.  Those could be the former employer, a colleague, a team member used to report to you, a teacher and a supervisor, to mention a few.

When deciding which referees should be in the references list, it is important to make sure they are showing in reversed chronological order, with the first showing on the list to be the most recent workplace.  Their reference list should be added to the resume on a different document, and only be sent to the employer when requested.  The reference list should be with the same font type and size and the document should have the same colors and design as the resume.

The referees to be listed should be contacted for approval of giving out their details.  Upon receiving the request from the employer to forward the reference list it will be wise as a matter of courtesy to advise the referees that their details were mentioned, that way they will also be alert for the phone call or email they may get from the potential employer.

The referees selected by the candidate should be all quality contacts who will be able to answer questions the employer may ask in regards to the skills and characteristics of the candidate. The more senior the position, the more referees needed and their seniority to be higher.
