What is The Main Purpose of DHCP?

DHCP is a network management protocol used on IP networks; an abbreviation of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It automates and provides the central management for the process of configuring devices on your IP network. DHCP dynamically assigns and leases IP address and information relating to your IP address in your network. For a computer be able to communicate on the network, DHCP plays an important role by assigning a unique IP address and appropriate subnet mask.

DHCP handles most of its tasks automatically. The information such as IP address, subnet mask, default gateways, Domain Name Servers (DNS) is contained in DHCP so that no clients will have duplicate addresses. It will make communications possible with each device that resides on the network and also error-free.

In most homes and small business, the router acts as the DHCP server for your network whereas, in a large organization, an allocated server or computer could be assigned to act as a DHCP server.

Why DHCP is important?

It’s easier than configuring each node/host statically (manually), both initially and then if/when LAN topology ever changes or the host moves networks for e.g. Phones, laptops etc. Providing reliable IP address configuration, it minimizes the configuration error and makes your organizational process more efficient.

DHCP provides the ability to assign multiple parameters such as subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, domain names, in addition to just a host IP address.  Manually assigning Ip address is tedious and time confusing, and also there are chances of error. With DHCP and automation, it makes the process much simpler and easier for network administrators.

Centralized Network Client Configuration

A system admin can create a tailored configuration to achieve certain results from their clients. All the configuration information of the user is stored in one single place in the DHCP data store. They can make changes for their clients by changing the information in the data store.

Supports Large Network

It is very beneficial for a large company where there are numerous clients, users and devices and to manage all of those within the network is a challenge itself. The DHCP server uses multithreading process to delegate control over those objects that also handles large amounts of data.

Logging and Management

DHCP servers can provide logging and management interfaces that help administrators to manage the IP address scopes. With your DHCP server and with some dedicated tool it helps to manage a large network with hundreds of nodes for any incidents, reports or issues.
