As the capital of Australian state South Wales, Sydney is the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. IT market of such big-city offers a vast range of opportunities for IT specialists. Software Testing positions usually hold a significant part of offered IT jobs and the situation in Sydney is not an exception. In this article, I would like to outline the results of my research for the Software Testing jobs in Sydney.
First of all, I must say that the IT job market in Sydney is very similar to Melbourne. May be offered salaries in Sydney might be a little bigger than in Melbourne, but this can be explained with expenses associated with living in such big metropolises as Sydney. Types of employment look the same – permanent, contract and casual with the same features as it was in Melbourne – casual positions are rare, the contract can be extended and paid by hourly rate, and so on.
Titles of the offered positions look also very similar:
- Test Manager or Test Lead. These positions are working with establishing strong test planning, test coordination, and management. Leading a team of testers on a critical piece of work and working with major business stakeholders. Requirements for such possibilities are 6+ years of experience in a similar position, solid people management, customer focus and communication skills, experience in all aspects of software testing. Strong understanding of SDLC.
- Test Analyst. Responsibilities for this type of position, in general, are the same as in Melbourne – it covers the responsibilities of Test Lead and Test Engineer. Requirements are very familiar: knowledge in test planning, design, and reporting, good analytical and problem-solving skills, experience working in different environments, a solid understanding of aspects of manual testing of all levels. Experience with automation tools, databases, and scripting languages also required for any advertised positions.
- (Manual) Test Engineer, QA Engineer, or Software Tester. I believe that there is no need to explain the responsibilities of these specialists since it is obvious. Key skillset, specified in advertisements usually looks like this: a Computer Science or similar degree (or equivalent industry certifications), experience working in Agile environment, documentation and defect management skills, a keen eye for details and good problem-solving skills, experience in SQL, different platforms (Windows Linux).
- Finally – (Automation) Test Engineer, QA Engineer, or Software Tester. Moderate requirements for such positions are the following: Computer Science degree or equivalent, testing frameworks experience – Selenium, Mocha, Tosca, UFT, TestComplete e.t.c. Proficiency in programming languages – C#, Java, JavaScript, VBS, Python, Ruby. Experience with CI/CD pipelines such as TeamCity, Jenkins, and Bamboo. Experience with version control and associated software – Git, GitHub, SourceTree. Understanding of APIs and related tools.
In conclusion, I would like to say, that despite the Software Testing jobs market in Sydney looks very similar to Melbourne, and there are some differences. For example – analysis shows that Sydney’s market is more focused on engineering positions than management or analytical opportunities.
