The cover letter is an important document when applying for jobs as it gives recruiters a chance to form a more detailed picture of you, and they are also a good place to add much-needed keywords to your application. This article guides you on how to improve your cover letter.
1. Customise your cover letter for each job application
Create a baseline for the cover letter and customise it according to the position you are applying for. Your cover letter should reflect that you have done some research on the company and most importantly, it must be convincing that you would make a great fit for this position.
2. Your cover letter must not duplicate your resume
Don’t make it too long by repeating things you have mentioned on your resume. Though it must complement your resume but try to limit only to your strongest skills. Keep it more conversational and show your personality off.
3. Try to connect your skills and experiences
Make sure to connect the skills and experiences listed in the job description to the skills and experiences mentioned on your resume. This makes it easy for recruiters to see exactly what they are looking for.
4. Be Precise and Outstanding
Try not to write more than three to four paragraphs with three to four sentences each. Make sure you have a stunning introduction and are closer to being the top candidate on their mind. Give a brief about your current position and your responsibilities. Send your cover letter in a pdf format as not every office can read certain doc files.
5. Show your enthusiasm
Discuss some soft skills and strengths and tell them what makes you passionate about your career and this job. Don’t sound boring as the cover letter is your written voice or else the recruiter might fall asleep.
6. Tell them what you know about their company
Discover about what the company does and how you can help them in achieving their goals and expectations. Compliment on what they have done right and what you admire about them. You should be clear enough on why you want to be a part of it.
7. Brag about yourself
Talk about your achievements and make them feel you are special.
