System engineers are IT professionals who implement and maintain computer systems for businesses. Their duties include implementing new systems and ensuring best performance. System engineers are typically required to possess a bachelor’s degree. Systems not only comprises of computers, but they deeply rely on the newest technology and advancements in engineering. There are several areas in which a systems engineer can work.
System engineers are also known as computer systems software engineers. They combine their knowledge of engineering and computers to implement computer systems for businesses and organizations. A bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar domain is the minimum requirement for the position of system engineer.
To become an efficient Systems engineer you must either go for bachelor’s in computer science or take a job training from an authorised source. Theses trainings covers the skills such as Manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure; ensure the enhanced levels of systems and infrastructure availability; Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools; monitoring and testing application performance for possible bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes; Writing and maintaining custom scripts to enhance system efficiency and reduces the human intervention time on many tasks; maintaining security, backup and redundancy strategies. Some of the duties of systems engineer are also to provide 2nd and 3rd level support and liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution. They often need to participate in the design of information and operational support systems.
There certain pre-requisites to become an efficient Systems engineer such as one should have proven working experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting UNIX /Linux based environments, solid experience in the administration of application stacks such as Ruby and tomcat, strong Cloud experience with AWS (preferred), experience with virtualization and containers using VMware or Virtual Box, experience with monitoring systems, experience with automation software such as Puppet, strong scripting skills (shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python), good networking knowledge.
System engineers generally hold at least bachelor’s degrees in computer science, software engineering or similar field. Computer science programs are inclined to courses in programming, data structures, computer systems and software engineering. Engineers may also require wide experience in the field, which they may gain through internships in relevant companies. Additionally, some companies might require their employees to hold graduate degrees or graduate-level certifications in computer science.
