Most Important ITIL Study Tips

ITIL Study Tips

ITIL is a framework of best practices for delivering IT services and enables candidates to look into IT service management through an end to end operating model for the creation, continual improvement, and delivery of products and services.

The ITIL exam is an entry level certification to test the general awareness of ITIL concepts. The ITIL exam comprises 40 questions to complete in 60 minutes. You need to score 65 percent (must get 26 questions correct) to pass the ITIL exam. Some tips which can be helpful while preparing for the exam is discussed below.

  1. Know properly what to read: Make sure you have covered all topics provided under the foundation syllabus of ITIL available from AXELOS. You can also opt for online courses available that can help you to speed up on the knowledge you want to gain.
  2. Practise Harder: Familiarise yourself with the exam pattern and work on sample papers and practise questions to get an idea. While practising the questions keep the time limit in mind to make sure that you can finish the real exam on time.
  3. Learn the Lifecycle and Capability Modules: The Foundation ITIL certification is all about getting your basic understanding of the lifecycle and capability module. Try to get acquainted with the abbreviations and jargon so that you can relate to it.
  4. Memorise Keywords: In ITIL we use a lot of keywords. One keyword is linked to other keyword. For example, the customer value keyword is related to the service strategy module. Some of the keywords are Service strategy, Service design, Service transition, etc.
  5. Think ITIL Only: When you go through ITIL concepts try to apply it in your real world scenario. There are many things which can be done in a different way in an organisational setting, so try that the organisation function and custom do not influence your answers. The answers should be based on what the ITIL concepts are based on.
  6. Service diagrams: The service diagrams help to visualize how the ITIL framework is applied to the process. The diagram helps in learning and to co-relate the ITIL concepts and process in day to day work.
  7. Read the questions carefully: Relax on the day of the exam and be well prepared. Try to schedule the exam when your knowledge is still fresh from your learning. Go through your questions carefully and try to know what the question is asking for, not what you know as the answer.
