Microsoft Windows 8.1 is the Windows operating system released in October 2013. It is the refined version of Windows 8 which includes advanced, additional features and bug fixes.
This version of windows is an operating system for client devices. In this article, I am going to discuss some of the hidden features, tips and tricks to get started with Windows 8.1
Personalise your Start Screen
With Windows 8.1 you can start screen background with a new colour of choices. For advance customisation, you can pick from more shade colours of certain hue to choose from and gives you more freedom with customisation.
With Windows 8.1, the search functionality is not only limited to your computer but also it searches online results for you. If you are connected to the internet, Microsoft’s default search engine ‘Bing’ will give you search result tailored to your search query.
Microsoft added a new short cut keyboard in windows 8 and this feature is still available in windows 8.1. It is a very handy tool as it contains shortcuts of various useful and frequently used applications such as command prompt, settings, windows powers shell, disk management, network management etc.
The menu can be launched by pressing ‘Windows+ x’ from the keyboard.
Use of Sky Drive as File Explorer
One of my favourite features has to be able to use sky drive as a file explorer in windows. Sky Drive is cloud-based storage that acts as a file explorer in your windows, except it is saved on the cloud. This means the cloud integration helps to access your files and folders anywhere from the world where you have access to the internet.
Automatic App Updates
Unlike the previous version of window, Window 8.1 automatically downloads and updates any of your update files. All you have to do is toggle the ‘Automatically update my apps’ to Yes. You can also set you manual update depending on your preference.
New Live Size Tiles
In Win 8.1 users can adjust the tile size, pin or unpin from start, uninstall if not needed and have the option to turn live tile off. The tile spaces also could be managed and customised according to users need.
Are you often distracted by the windows annoying notification and pop up sounds that keep distracting you from focusing on your task? Win 8.1 has “Quiet hours settings” function that lets you silence your notification for a specific time of the day.
Wireless Display Support
Another cool feature Microsoft has introduced in Win 8.1 is the Miracast wireless display support. You can directly cast your multimedia files from your Windows 8.1 device to another display device which supports multimedia casting feature.
Picture Password to log in
In Windows 8.1 you would be able to create a picture password. All you have to do is choose an image and draw on it on a combination of taps, lines and circles. Only the user who can reproduce that pattern can log on.
