Microsoft Azures’s revenue has constantly been growing going from $880 million USD in 2015 to $13 billion USD in 2019. Today in 2021, Azure’s revenue has reached a whopping $46 billion USD, which equates to around $63 billion AUD!
Azure was created by Microsoft and released in 2010. Azure is mainly known as a cloud computing service that can be used for managing apps, building apps, deploying apps, testing apps, etc. Azure is free for 31 days after creating an account, where you will also receive free $200 USD credit to use their services. After the 31 days are up, you will need to pay-as-you-go. For example, if you use a CPU for a couple of hours, you will only be charged for the time it was used.
In saying that, you must be wondering why Azure is so popular today. Let’s take a look at the services or features Azure provides.
Azure Virtual Machines (Azure VM) was released in 2008 and allows a user to create Windows or Linux virtual machines. An advantage of this for a business would be scalability, as a business wouldn’t need to add physical hardware. For example, Let’s say a business needs better processing time and the only way to achieve this is to add more RAM. The business has the ability to add the extra RAM virtually, rather than physically. As mentioned above, Azure VM charges at an hourly rate, If your virtual machine is ‘running’ for 1 hour, you will get charged just for the hour.
Launched in 2018, Azure DevOps (Dev standing for Development and Ops standing for Operations) allows teams to collaborate to plan work, work on code, build or deploy apps, and is usually used in the Software Development process. There are a couple of reasons why Azure DevOps is preferred over other DevOp Tools such as GitHub and they are Platform and Cloud Independence. Platform Independent meaning even though Azure DevOps is created by Microsoft, it doesn’t just focus its attention on Microsoft. It can work with any platform whether it’s Windows, Mac, or Linux, and with any language whether it’s Java, Python, Android, PHP, and so on. Cloud Independent meaning Azure DevOps model is also supported with AWS and GCP.
Azure Active Directory was released in 2000 and acts as Microsoft’s IAM (Identify and access management service) for the cloud, which allows employees to sign in and access resources. There are so many reasons why Azure AD is so popular. The first being, you have all the control of the IAM in one place. Do you need to assign a user to a group? Use Azure AD. Do you need to reset the passport of a specific user? Use AD Secondly, the main priority all organisations have (or should have!) is security as you want to keep their resources and their employees safe. Azure AD has specific security measures in place to avoid threats and attacks from happening, such as multi-factor authentication, threat detection, and more.
One of the most popular Azure services today was released in 2017 and is named Azure Cosmos DB. Cosmos DB is normally used by companies with around 50 to 200 employees and around 1 to 10 million USD dollars in revenue and has the main objective of managing data at a large scale for modern app development.
Other popular Microsoft Azure services include API Management, Azure Backup, Azure Content Delivery Network, Logic Apps, Azure Bots, and Azure Site Recovery. The list goes on! In saying that, Do you think that Microsoft Azure will improve your business and assist with your business needs? If you answered yes, why not take an Azure course to learn about Azure from top to bottom and get yourself ready for the future. There are a wide variety of training courses and certification exams for Azure such as Azure DevOps, Microsoft Azure (AD-104), and so on.
