The VLAN creates broadcast domains that help in channelizing the network traffic. The traffic comprises of broadcast and multicast data flowing over to all the destinations present in the network. The VLAN reduces traffic by preventing it from going to unintended users. For example, if the broadcast domain comprises 20 users and the traffic is intended for only 10 users it creates a separate VLAN and assigns it to them which helps in reducing the traffic.
The VLAN also ensures that there are fewer latency issues on the network as switches take place of routers. The routers took a lot more processing time while handling the incoming traffic. As the traffic load increases, so does the latency in the routers which reduces the performance of the network. Since VLAN uses switches to create broadcast domains, the number of routers required decreases.
VLAN’s also provides reliability to critical applications. They prioritize among the traffic so that the critical application data keeps flowing even when the low-quality traffic spikes.
The VLAN protects from external and internal threats. The external threat comprises unauthorized users trying to access the network or in case if the gain access to one VLAN then they will remain confined to the particular section of the network. In terms of internal threat, by confining the users or groups to the network assigned to them as their responsibilities ensures security and privacy.
VLAN is used to restrict access, control the broadcast domain, build firewalls, and report in case of intrusion.
3. Simplified Administration:
The VLAN helps in a logical segmentation of the network and grouping the users into the same virtual network so that it is easy to control policies at a group level. When users physically move from one workstation/team to another work station/team it is easy to provide them new VLAN access they need rather than the earlier process of moving the workgroup or equipment closer to each other.
4. Easy Management:
As in the VLAN the users are put in a virtual group, it is simple and easy to manage any problems when they arise. One can easily narrow down to the particular virtual group concerned and troubleshoot the issues without causing any disruption to the other groups.
As switches in VLAN are used to create the broadcast domain, so the need for expensive routers lessens which helps in saving the costs.
