In the field of computer networking, point-to-point protocol (PPP) is used when there is a direct link between two communicating devices. It a method by which we can send multi-protocol data over the directly connected link. It is a data link layer (layer-2) protocol and therefore data is sent in the form of frames. PPP has three main components, namely – encapsulation (used for encapsulating the data which is being sent over the link), link control protocol (LCP, which is used for establishing, configuring, maintaining, testing and termination of the link), and network control protocol (NCP, used for negotiating the parameters and facilities for the network layer).
PPP is not anyone’s proprietary and can be used anywhere. In contrast to its predecessors, PPP offers pre-connection negotiations between the links. It can be used over any type of links, be it a twisted pair cabling, fibre-optics, or wireless transmission. We can even use PPP for deploying security in terms of authentication. One side of the link can be used as an authenticating server. PPP allows various authenticating protocols to be used on its framework, like PAP (password authentication protocol) and CHAP (challenge-handshake authentication protocol). PPP also offers data compression capability for data to be sent over the link. It uses the process of looping traffic to ensure the good health of the link. And for this, it creates a random 32-bit magic number which it sends to the remote endpoint of the link. If the mismatch of the magic number occurs, it means the communication is bidirectional, and if there is no mismatch of the magic number, it means the communication is one way and it is smooth. PPP also uses a frame check sequence to ensure error control. One of the key benefits of using PPP is that is an extensive protocol, several protocols have been added to it over the year that has increased its capabilities. With the implementation of PPP, organisations can save money as well. The WAN connections required to connect two physically distant networks can be very costly, so we can use PPP to ensure the authenticating capabilities of the WAN by using an inexpensive internet connection.
The PPP frames are comprehensive and helpful in error detection. Its negotiating mechanism is also very robust. It enables the use of various authenticating protocols and also supports additional features like compression and encryption and also link aggregation.
