Importance of OSI in Understanding Networking

A network is a complicated structure where important data transmission takes place between devices. The internal device connection describes the complex process that needs to be guided by protocols. Protocols control the communication in a system to ensure that the data send is received by the intended destination and is transmitted with accuracy.

In the earlier days of computer networking, the vendors created trademarked networking models to support their products. These models were only able to aid communication between devices that were from the same vendor. This led to a communication barrier between products of different manufacturers. So, users were forced to buy all the networking devices from the same vendor which was neither good nor profitable for both consumers and manufacturers. To break this barrier, all the leading vendors decided to agree on a vendor-neutral model that could work along with their networking devices.

The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model which is a Seven Layers Model was created for the following reasons:

  1. Standardize the data networking protocols to allow all the networking devices of the planet to communicate with each other.
  2. Provides a common platform for hardware manufacturers and software developers to create networking products that can communicate with each other over the network.
  • Divides large data segment to smaller segments over exchange to facilitate network administrators to manage, understand, and troubleshoot data easily.
  1. It takes a layered approach to allow manufacturers to build and design specific applications and hardware in one layer for a distinct purpose without affecting the set of network protocol. Each individual layer has a definite functionality along with the protocols and devices that are required to perform that task.

The advantages of the OSI model are mentioned below:

  1. It helps the network administrators and manufacturers in determining the required software and hardware to build the network.
  2. It provides a tool that helps to understand the communication process used between the networking devices.
  3. It makes a complex function split up into simpler components.
  4. Troubleshooting becomes easier for the network administrators as they can directly focus on the layer causing the issue than looking for it over the entire network. This makes troubleshooting easier, time saving, and effective.
  5. The hardware manufacturers are encouraged to produce networking products that are compatible with the vendor neutral networking model so that the devices can communicate with each other. This business approach is acceptable and profitable for vendors and manufacturers all around the world.
