Packet Tracer is a multi-platform cross-platform visual simulation software developed by Cisco that allows users to create network topologies and simulate modern computer networks. It allows network users to immitate the configuration of Cisco routers and switches using a simulated command line interface. It allows users to add and remove simulated network devices by the using drag and drop user interface. It is an educational tool for Certified Cisco Network Associate Academy students to help them learn the fundamental CCNA concepts. Packet Tracer can run on multiple operating system ranging from Linux, Microsoft Windows, Android, iOS to macOS. It allows users to immitate the network topologies by dragging and dropping routers, switches and various other types of network devices. In packet tracer visual , a physical connection between devices is represented by a ‘cable’ item. The Packet Tracer supports basic routing with RIP, OSPF, EIGR and BGP. It also supports an array of simulated Application Layer protocolst to the extent required by the current CCNA curriculum.
Packet Tracer allows network administrators and students to experiment with cisco network device behaviour. It is a very useful Cisco network simulation tool which provides simulation and visualization capabilities that facilitates the lab testing and learning of complex scenarios and concepts. Packet Tracer does not require physical equipment, it has ability to create a virtual network with almost unlimited number of devices, encouraging practice, design scenarios testing and troubleshooting.
Below is the step by step procedure on installing and setting up a Packet tracer on Windows PC :
STEP 1 : Downloading the Packet Tracer exe file. Clicking on the exe file downloaded and clicking “Next” on the windows appeared.
STEP 2 : A dialog box stating all the do’s and dont’s appear. Selecting the “I accept the agreement” option and clicking “Next”.
STEP 3 : A setup will show the folder in which the program’s shortcuts will be created. It can be changed if we want to change the location. Then clicking “Next”.
STEP 4 : The program will ask whether to create a Desktop icon and create a Quick Launch icon. We can make our choice and then click “Next”.
STEP 5 : In this phase, the summary of the settings we have selected before is displayed. We can see carefully on the configurations and click “Install”.
STEP 6 : The installation starts
STEP 7 : Installation gets completed. A dialog box “Finish” appears. Click it. Click “OK” on the next popup asking you to close or restart your computer.
STEP 8 : The Packet Tracer is installed and it is ready to be used.
