Explanation of The ITIL

ITIL, formerly an acronym for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a detailed set of practices and procedures for IT Service management (ITSM) in which a business or an organisation can follow to provide optimal value for their customers through their IT services. The best practice framework of ITIL provides a common language and required tools that can be utilised for better collaboration within IT teams to deliver value across the business.

The main strength of ITIL can be identified as its adaptability into a business according to its needs. The best practices introduced through ITIL are both scalable and flexible hence allowing businesses to adapt according to as much as or as little as they want. ITIL can be utilised to work in conjunction with other practices such as COBIT, TOGAF and Six sigma as well.

It is also important to note that ITIL is not developed around a specific business model. Rather, it is based upon experiences of IT professionals collectively and this approach has helped many businesses around the world to better prepare, practice and deliver IT services.

Basically, ITIL is a set of processes for refining and improving an IT service lifecycle which helps to improve the capabilities of businesses, processes and people while ensuring when changes to technology or business practices occur, the business can adapt quickly and stay on top.

  • Infrastructure not being able to absorb new changes.
  • Inability to measure performances.
  • Lack of governance structure.
