Best Ways to Improve Your Resume

As observed by an eye-tracking study, a resume that is most likely to get noticed by a recruiter shares the following attributes. A clear, simple resume that uses logical layouts and the use of clear fonts. In saying that, even if the content in your resume is impressive but a hard-to-read font or illogical layout is used, your chances to land the job may still be slim.

Here are some other ways to improve your resume to make your chances to get hired higher.

Based on the statistic above, ensure you use an attractive template with a basic font. The template will be the employer’s first impression of you, it will be the first thing they will see and judge you on! In saying that this does not mean go for a colourful template and fonts that will make your resume hard to read.

Always make sure everything that is added is valuable and will actually support you in landing the job. In other words, you should ‘eliminate clutter’ that has just been added to make your resume longer. This is one of the employers’ main pet peeves: having to read information that is of no use at all, don’t do it! Employers scan through resumes in a matter of seconds to see if a candidate meets the criteria by looking at keywords, they are not interested in reading long useless paragraphs. Remember, quality over quantity. This is your resume, not your life story!

You should always know your audience. If you’re applying for McDonalds, you aren’t going to prioritize every single one of your computer programming skills! Make sure you know the business needs for the company you are applying for. In simple terms, you should craft your resume in a way to show you are the solution to what the hiring company is looking for.

An obvious tip is to proofread. Not only by yourself, get a friend or family member to have a quick read of it for you. The last thing you want is for you to be a perfect candidate yet not getting the job due to spelling errors or grammatical mistakes. It shows that you lack attention to detail, which is the main skill you need for every single job out there.

Another obvious tip is to include all of your contact details. Ensure you provide the employer with multiple ways of contacting you. You aren’t always going to be available to answer your phone. You will be surprised at how many resumes employers receive that only provide one point of contact! Common details that should always be added to a resume are your full name, address, phone number, email address. If you have a LinkedIn profile (which you should!) or a website, ensure you provide a link.

Don’t lie on your resume! The last thing you want is to land an interview and get asked a question about something you lied about that you know nothing about. Or even worse landing the job, and on your first day getting given a task that you said you are an expert at, but actually having no clue how to do it.

Last but not least. Add suitable references and make sure they are updated. It should be obvious what a suitable reference is, but you’d be amazed at who some candidates have listed as their reference. Do not have a family member, roommate, or anyone that has fired you in the past as a reference. This should be common sense! Instead have a former employer, teacher, or supervisor. Firstly ensure you have asked all your referees for permission to have them listed as a reference as an employer is more than likely to give them a call, which is why it is also important to keep their contact information up to date. Having the appropriate referees is important and can significantly boost your chances of landing the job.
