Benefits of The VTP

Understanding VTP

Virtual LAN Trunk Protocol (VTP) is a Cisco proprietary protocol. Specially designed for the network engineer or administrator to reduce the administrative task and also minimize the possibility of error. It manages VLANs for a large network with multiple interconnected switches reducing network administration in a switched network.

For a small home or office network, it would be easy to configure VLAN and VLAN trunking and are easy to manage. But to configure VLAN and VLAN trunking in a large network with many interconnected switches, it would be a very hard task. And for that reason, we need VTP for the following reasons.

Advantages of VTP

VTPs are mainly beneficial for the following reasons

  • It drastically reduces the administrative overhead task. Network Administrators don’t have to manually log into each switch, and configure in each of them and configure. It is a big task where there are hundreds of switches involved in the network.
  • Reduces the chances of an error. As VLANs can be created on only a single switch and the same VLAN information is propagated through VTP messages for all switches in network reducing the margin or error.
  • VTP serves as a central point of management to manage and configure VLANs. Any changes made on the server mode gets replicated onto other switches.
  • Provides a consistent VLAN configuration throughout the switched network. The VTP clients will synchronize themselves with the latest information.
  • When network or administrators defines a VTP management domain on each switch, the switches exchange VTP information automatically and does not require any further configuration on dayto-day management.
  • VTP helps to manage and maintain consistency of VLAN throughout the network.
  • Eliminates the multiple configurations of VLANs in your network. With the option of VLAN pruning, it will also help administrators by avoiding sending traffic only through some switches.

VTP consists of three modes and can operate on any switch throughout the network.

VTP Server mode

It is the default VTP mode for all switches. The network admin can add, create, delete VLANs and can make necessary changes in a switch in the server. A VTP server switch will broadcast VLAN changes.

VTP Client Mode

A switch which has this mode configured listens for VTP advertisements, receives updates, processes and forward. However, they cannot create, modify or delete existing VLANs.

VTP Transparent Mode

In this mode, VTP parameter is configured in every switch that is connected to the network. The switch does not sync the VTP database with other switches but forwards received VTP advertisements.
